Eileen reports on the discovery of a chequered swallowtail butterfly in Chiltern

Chequered Swallowtail 5 E Collins

Eileen observed this beautiful butterfly in her garden and it was feeding on a variety of plants including everlastings (not the local type), bottlebrush, Eremophila calorhabdos, and possibly likes other eremophilas. The pic does not show the lovely spotting on the upper wings (probably the incorrect terminology for that region)which was really striking.I have never seen this sp here before.Quite large, perhaps 10cm wingspan.

Ken Walker from the Museum of Victoria wrote back and said Hi Eileen, Great photo again. This species is indeed rare in Victoria so I am not surprised you have not seen it before. Below is a distribution map showing our Victorian records for this species and as you can see, we do not Have any records for the Albury area since before 1969 – however, this could also reflect a collecting artefact.
